Drafting Dzanan Musa

Brooklyn entered the 2018 NBA Draft with two picks, and used their 29th overall pick to select Dzanan Musa. The 6’9″ wing from Bosnia and Herzegovina was expected to be a high first round pick. However, teams drafting early in the first round wanted him to spend another season gaining experience overseas. Musa wanted to enter the NBA immediately, and the Nets were willing to give him the opportunity.

He spent the last three seasons playing for KK Cedevita in Europe. He averaged 15.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per 36 minutes, and was a primary scoring option for the team. He also proved he could excel in big-game situations, scoring 21 points in Game 4 of the 2018 Eurocup Finals.

Drafted at only 19 years old, selecting Musa is clearly a developmental pick for the future. He struggled from beyond the arc in Europe, shooting only 29 percent in his three seasons. Another area of concern transitioning to the NBA is his defense. Weighing only 195 pounds, he could struggle guarding the larger forwards in the league.

Musa has the potential to become a viable threat offensively. He has the ability to score off-the-dribble, and his skill-set should jell within coach Kenny Atkinson’s system. If he can bulk up his frame and improve defensively, he could be viewed as one of the steals from this draft in a couple of years.
