Wizards claim Thomas Bryant off waivers

The Wizards made a quiet move on the free agent market when they claimed big man Thomas Bryant off waivers. Since his acquisition on July 2, Bryant looked good as a big man prospect right away on the Summer League circuit.

In Las Vegas, Bryant put up 14.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 blocks per contest for the Wizards’ Summer League squad. He shot 61.2 percent from the field and 81.2 percent from the free throw line, two solid attributes for a center on the rise. He also has the ability to stretch the floor and shoot 3s. He shot 67-for-184 (36.4 percent) from behind the arc in the G League with the South Bay Lakers.

Bryant just finished up his rookie season on a Lakers’ roster full of frontcourt players. With a different situation in Washington, Bryant’s potential for growth has changed a bit. It will be interesting to see if the Wizards find a place for him, especially since Jason Smith is seldom used.
