Trading Marcin Gortat for Austin Rivers

The Wizards wasted very little time in the offseason trading center Marcin Gortat. On June 26, they traded the 11-year veteran to the Los Angeles Clippers for combo guard Austin Rivers.

After posting his lowest production (8.4 points and 7.6 rebounds per game) since the 2009-10 season, Gortat and the team decided to part ways as he enters the last season on his contract.

The trade hopefully alleviates whatever locker room trouble existed between Gortat and All-Star point guard John Wall, but it also should give head coach Scott Brooks a confident guard to rely on should both Wall and Bradley Beal end up off the floor.

Rivers is a sure ball-handler and when given the green light, he can fill it up. He averaged a career-high 15.1 points and 4.0 assists along with 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game for the Clippers in 2017-18.

If Rivers doesn’t work out, the Wizards won’t have to fret too long, as he’s on an expiring deal as well. It seems Jodie Meeks will also have some work to do after his suspension, or he could find himself short on playing time. This also leaves Tomas Satoransky‘s role in question.
