Drafting Troy Brown Jr.

The selection of Troy Brown Jr. with the 15th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft was taken with lukewarm feelings, initially. Brown turned all that doubt around, though, with his play in Summer League.

As a freshman with the University of Oregon, Brown averaged 11.3 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.6 steals per contest as a full-time starter. Through 35 appearances, he shot 44.4 percent from the floor and 29.1 percent from 3-point range.

In Summer League, his numbers showed a bit of carryover. Despite posting a record of 1-4 as a team, Brown averaged 18.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He didn’t shoot the ball particularly well from 3-point range (15.8 percent), but he showed aggression on offense.

It’s an attribute the Wizards’ have lacked at times outside of John Wall and Bradley Beal. Considering Wall missed 41 games last season, they’ll need to have some young legs to rely on. At 6’7″ and 215 pounds, he has an NBA-ready body to play either wing. He’ll certainly push Otto Porter Jr. and Kelly Oubre Jr. for playing time, alongside Devin Robinson, another Summer League standout.

Grade: B+
