Orlando Magic

Key additions: Mohamed Bamba (draft), Isaiah Briscoe (free agency), Jerian Grant (trade), Timofey Mozgov (trade), Jarell Martin (trade)

Key subtractions: Mario Hezonja (free agency), Bismack Biyombo (trade), Shelvin Mack (free agency)

It wasn’t a bad summer for the Orlando Magic. Despite the frontcourt overlap between Aaron Gordon, Jonathan Isaac and their new rookie (we won’t even mention Nikola Vucevic, Khem Birch or Timofey Mozgov), I like the Mohamed Bamba pick. Trae Young was already off the board and Bamba not only has dazzling upside, but at the very least, a high floor as a defensive anchor and rim-runner in the same vein as a Clint Capela type.

However, how does a team more desperate for point guard help than anyone in the league not address that issue over the summer? No offense to D.J. Augustin, Isaiah Briscoe and new arrival Jerian Grant, but the Magic may have the worst point guard rotation in the NBA — yes, even worse than the Phoenix Suns’ trio of Brandon Knight, Elie Okobo and Shaquille Harrison.

Declining Mario Hezonja’s fourth-year option before the start of last season came back to bite Orlando, and the slight financial upgrade from Bismack Biyombo’s contract to Timofey Mozgov’s deal doesn’t make up for the fact that Biyombo’s been a more useful player over the last few years.

At the crux of Orlando’s summer was the four-year, $80 million extension for Aaron Gordon, who is now being paid like a franchise player. The Magic had no choice to pony up — especially after watching Tobias Harris and Victor Oladipo flourish elsewhere — but he’s going to have to significantly improve in a crowded frontcourt to live up to being the face of the franchise.
