Atlanta Hawks

Key additions: Trae Young (draft), Kevin Huerter (draft), Omari Spellman (draft), Jeremy Lin (trade), Justin Anderson (trade), Alex Len (free agency), Vince Carter (free agency), Daniel Hamilton (free agency)

Key subtractions: Dennis Schroder (trade), Mike Muscala (trade), Malcolm Delaney (free agency)

The Atlanta Hawks aren’t going to be very good in 2018-19, and that’s okay. It’s by design, and their whole offseason plan was executed perfectly with that in mind. The Hawks found their replacement for Dennis Schroder in point guard Trae Young, added more shooting with Kevin Huerter and Omari Spellman and continued to pepper in young talent and older veterans.

The Splash Babies backcourt will be fun to watch develop, even with Atlanta’s glut of wings fighting for minutes. A Kent Bazemore trade would make sense to clear out more time for Taurean Waller-Prince, Deandre’ Bembry and even Justin Anderson, but we can’t be too nitpicky; this team needs some established players.

The Hawks brought in Jeremy Lin to help teach the young backcourt, Vince Carter to mentor all those wings and capitalized on the Carmelo Anthony trade to jettison the discontented Schroder. Trading down for Young when Luka Doncic was available could be a mistake, but at least it came attached with a 2019 first round draft pick (top-five protected).

Throw in the 2022 first round pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder (lottery protected), another 2019 first-rounder from the Cleveland Cavaliers (top-10 protected) and their own first-rounder that’s likely to be in the top five, and the Hawks have built a bevy of assets and young talent to rebuild with.

Grade: B+
