Trading Vincent Edwards to the Houston Rockets

Prior to the 2018 NBA Draft, general manager Dennis Lindsey had two draft picks to work with — one in the first round at No. 21 and one in the second at No. 52. The Jazz used their first round pick on Allen, but Lindsey opted to not keep the selection of the 11th all-time leading scoring in Big 10 history, trading Vincent Edwards to the conference rival Houston Rockets.

There really wasn’t much of a reaction by Jazz fans to trading the pick. While it wouldn’t have hurt to add another young, talented scorer, the Jazz had a few in-house options and (at the time) key impending free agents; so it makes sense they opted to consolidate a bit by trading the pick for cash. That doesn’t mean it was necessarily the right move.

By solely looking at Edwards’ NBA Summer League stats, Lindsey made the right move. Edwards shot 35 percent from the floor, averaging 7.8 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.

While Edwards didn’t have any one standout play in Summer League action, he did have a nice all-around performance against the Los Angeles Clippers:

Edwards displayed excellent off-ball movement and cuts, something that would have served him well in Quin Snyder’s motion-heavy offense. Edwards may pan out to be nothing more than a role player, but playoff teams need them too.
