Portland Trail Blazers: 5 possible two-way contract candidates
2. D.J. Hogg
D.J. Hogg is another under-the-radar player that Portland should keep its eye on. Hogg showed potential as a stretch-big during his three seasons at Texas A&M. He averaged 11.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game and shot 37.8 percent from beyond the arc in his final year for the Aggies. However, his played was overshadowed by the emergence of Boston Celtics draftee Robert Williams.
Hogg went undrafted, but signed on with the New Orleans Pelicans for the Summer League. He averaged 7.5 points per game and shot 37.5 from 3-point range in Vegas. He even scored 16 points in a loss to the New York Knicks.
At 6’9″ and 215 pounds, Hogg is a tall body with an impressive shooting stroke. He is dangerous in catch-and-shoot opportunities, but he also has a big enough body that he can rumble inside and corral a rebound. However, he doesn’t have the best foot speed, which could be a problem down the line.
If Portland chose to sign D.J. Hogg to a two-way deal, his height and shooting touch would allow him to slot in at either forward position. Like Penava, scouts will get a chance to see more of Hogg’s skills at the G League Player Invitational. If he impresses in Chicago, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to give him a two-way contract and see what he can become.
