The second round

Matchup: (2) San Antonio Spurs vs. (6) Golden State Warriors

Coming into this series, many believed the San Antonio Spurs would make quick work of the Warriors. Despite being heavy underdogs, it was clear the Dubs weren’t going down without a fight.

Game 1 was a perfect microcosm for the entire series. Both teams traded heavy blows throughout the course of the game. Neither one could pull away from the other. Stephen Curry was a human torch, breaking down every defender thrown in front of him. This performance by Curry dragged the Warriors into double-overtime.

With under five seconds to play, the Dubs held on to a one-point lead. Then, Manu Ginobili drilled the game-winning shot to end the game. Curry finished with 44 points and 11 assists.

The Warriors came dangerously close to stealing Game 1 and were ready for another opportunity. Led by Klay Thompson‘s 34 points and 14 rebounds, the Dubs tied the series in Game 2. The Spurs bounced back by dominating Golden State in Game 3, but the Warriors responded by winning Game 4. The rookie Harrison Barnes carried the team with 26 points to keep the Warriors alive.

This run by Golden State was on the verge of becoming historic. Unfortunately, the magic ran out during Game 5. Curry shot just 28 percent from the field and scored only nine points as the Spurs won by 18. The Spurs ended the series in Game 6 and would go on to win the Western Conference.
