The Detroit Pistons drafted Stanley Johnson to be their 3-and-D wing of the future. He’s struggled to do so, but 2018-19 could be the year he takes the leap.

The Detroit Pistons are in the midst of a transition. The majority of the roster is on notice since they were brought in under the old regime. This group includes former first round pick, Stanley Johnson.

Through three seasons, Johnson has flashed potential as a 3-and-D star. His athleticism allows him to lock down on defense, while easily getting to his spots on offense. However, he has lacked the shooting and consistency the team is looking for.

Under new head coach Dwane Casey, Johnson will be given the opportunity to succeed. His defensive versatility will work well in Casey’s switch friendly system. However, his lack of a consistent 3-point shot will reduce his role. Through three seasons, his slash line of .370/.295/.760 leaves much to be desired. If he can extend his range past the rim, he has the chance to develop into a defensive-minded DeMar DeRozan type of player.

This is the final year of Johnson’s rookie deal. If he wants to make himself a decent amount of money next summer, he’ll have to show some serious progress. Under Casey’s tutelage, Johnson has his best chance yet to develop into the prospect that the team hoped for when he was drafted. While his defense will be good, he has a few other things to work to make the rest of his game great.
