Bringing back Devin Harris

The Mavericks lost their backup shooting guard when Yogi Ferrell backed out of his two-year, $5.2 million contract agreement to sign with the Sacramento Kings. Dallas was able to make up for its losses by signing Devin Harris to the one-year, veteran’s minimum contract, per Yahoo! Sports’ Shams Charania.

Dallas made the deal for Harris possible by trading for and later waiving Chinanu Onuaku, per ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowksi. They also received cash and a 2020 secound round pick swap from the Houston Rockets in the trade.

There isn’t space for Onuaku without causing a logjam at the center position. He’s most known for shooting his free throws granny-style.

Harris, 35, will be entering his third stint with the team. He has chemistry with Dirk Nowitzki, J.J. Barea and Harrison Barnes, and is comfortable in Rick Carlisle’s system. He’ll be able to fill the backup shooting guard role left open by Ferrell, albeit in lesser minutes.

Grade: C+
