Re-signing Salah Mejri

The Mavericks re-signed center Salah Mejri to a one-year deal worth the league’s minimum, per the New York Times‘ Marc Stein. Mejri was teammates with Luka Doncic during the 2014-15 season in Real Madrid.

This move is partially about making Doncic comfortable in his rookie season. Early in the pre-draft process, “Wonder Boy” was unsure about leaving Europe for the NBA. Now that he’s here, the Mavericks don’t want to lose him.

Although the Mavericks have an abundance of centers through the draft, Mejri is worth a roster spot as he always plays with intensity. In 12.0 minutes, the 7’1″ center averaged 3.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game on 64.2 percent field goal shooting.

Mejri has a very limited skill-set and might take away playing time from the younger centers. Still, the Mavs want to compete in 2018 and he gives them the best chance of that off the bench.

Grade: B-
