Cleveland Cavaliers: The offseason summed up by Twitter
By Ryan Piers
It has been a wild and crazy offseason for the Cleveland Cavaliers. And with every turn, Twitter has chimed in as only Twitter can.
Most certainly, the 2018 offseason will be looked at as a franchise turning point for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The organization was forced to leave behind the LeBron James era, entering something of a post-apocalyptic, unwitting euphoria where it aimlessly redefines itself while holding on to the remnants of 2016’s jubilation.
The Cavs also extended a big-name player, Kevin Love, while drafting what will hopefully be the franchise’s cornerstone point guard. Those three occurrences will undoubtedly dictate the team for the next decade, possibly longer.
Of course, no place better captures the emotions and memories from a roller coaster-like offseason than Twitter.
Cleveland’s hectic summer began by drafting University of Alabama star Collin Sexton. Predictably, his coach and former NBA coach/player Avery Johnson congratulated his prodigy.

Alabama is known as a football school. So it wasn’t surprising Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end and former Crimson Tide standout, O.J. Howard, got into the action, pledging his allegiance to the Cavs.

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert congratulated his new rookie, praising his sense of style.
It’s fun to watch old timers talk like the kids. Sexton seemed ready to make his mark on “The Land.”
No surprise, LeBron’s departure sparked plenty of Twitter buzz.
The reaction to LeBron leaving for L.A. came from all corners of Twitterdome. Of course, celebrities chimed in. Apparently Chrissy Teigen can tell the future, predicting James’ decision.
Yeah, you and every other person living south of San Francisco.
I don’t even know if Lil Wayne is speaking English in this Tweet. Neither does Google translator.
Parody sites really got into the mix.
New teammate Lonzo Ball is a fan. Watching this duo share the rock is going to be fun.
We’re still not sure exactly what LaVar Ball thinks, but does anyone really want to know?
Other NBA players were quick to chime in. Always vocal on Twitter, Portland Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum put on his tin foil hat.
Atlanta Hawks guard Jeremy Lin was tweeting what everyone else in the Eastern Conference was thinking.
James, himself, finally broke his silence on Twitter more than a week after announcing he’d taken up a permanent residency in Los Angeles. Did he talk about his teammates? How eager he was to play for the Lakers? Did he even mention basketball?
No. James’ first statement following the big move involved pizza.

LeBron, we all love pizza. But maybe say something official first before going on the record about where you plan to get your next pie.
The social media winner of the offseason, not just in Cleveland, but around the league, was Kevin Love. Look, not everyone is going to like his hefty new contract.
Still, you have to respect how he went about signing the deal. Love invited team employees and construction workers into Quicken Loans Arena to be a part of the moment.
It was the absolute perfect way to commemorate the ordeal — Love tactfully cozied up to a fanbase that has always treated him lukewarmly. LeBron James approved.
And so did Air Bud.
It was an eventual offseason for the Cleveland Cavaliers, but whether the team is competing for titles or at the bottom of the barrel, you can be guaranteed NBA Twitter will have something to say about it.
