Recounting Devin Harris’ complicated history with the Dallas Mavericks
2004-08
Devin Harris was taken with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards. Although headlined by Dwight Howard, it was an otherwise lackluster draft.
He was traded in a package that included Christian Laettner and Jerry Stackhouse to the Mavericks for reigning Sixth Man of the Year Antawn Jamison. He played sparingly in his rookie year and in the playoffs.
The then 22-year-old came up big in the postseason of his sophomore year, however, averaging 9.4 points on 48.0 percent shooting. He helped Dallas reach the NBA Finals, before ultimately losing to the Miami Heat in six games.
The following season, he became the starting point guard and helped the Mavericks to a team-record 67 wins in the regular season. However, the eighth-seeded Golden State Warriors dismantled the Mavericks, defeating them in six games.
In his fourth season, Harris averaged career-highs of 14.4 points and 5.3 assists on 48.3 percent shooting in 39 games. Despite this, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets for Jason Kidd, in what would be Kidd’s second stay in Dallas.
