2021: Giannis Antetokounmpo, SF, Milwaukee Bucks
Could you imagine the Greek Freak in purple and gold? It would be a every L.A. fan’s fantasy. Unfortunately, at this moment, it’s something Giannis Antetokounmpo is vehemently against.
Or at least, that’s the sentiment he shared with Colin Cowherd a few weeks ago.
So, umm, yeah. Not exactly as cryptic as Paul George, is he? Antetokounmpo wants to finish what he started with the Milwaukee Bucks, and plans on bringing the franchise its second championship. Personally, I think it’s a respectable stance and a true statement of Antetokounmpo’s resolve. It’s definitely better than the beat-around-the-bush approach so many other pro athletes take when talking about their futures.
But what if the Bucks don’t win a title soon (a prospect that seems unlikely)? Or maybe friction develops between him and the coaching staff/front office? As I’ve already alluded to, anything is possible in today’s NBA. Between now and 2021 free agency, Antetokounmpo could completely change his tune. Even if he is eligible for the supermax extension, the Bucks may never watch him put pen to paper again.
Before you get your hopes too high, though, remember Antetokounmpo’s statement above. The 23-year-old superstar is clearly content with playing in Milwaukee, and his song doesn’t seem likely to change anytime soon. The Lakers even getting a meeting with the uber-athletic forward is a pipe dream at best.
If Johnson got the opportunity, though, you better believe he’d throw the kitchen sink at Antetokounmpo. Teaming him with James and whoever else was left of the Lakers’ young core would certainly give the franchise a legitimate shot at the Western Conference crown.
