Los Angeles Lakers: Dream free agency targets for the next 3 offseasons
Believe it or not, the Los Angeles Lakers are becoming a marquee landing spot for free agents again. In Magic Johnson’s dreams, these superstars would be legitimate options during the next three offseasons.
LeBron James signed with the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s official — the 16-time champions are worth taking seriously again. Assuming that’s actually the case, it only seems logical to pinpoint a few other superstars who could make the trip to Hollywood in each of the next three years.
After handing out a bunch of one-year contracts this offseason, the Lakers will have the money to sign a superstar in 2019. If that plan doesn’t come to fruition, they could theoretically have enough cap space to again dish out a max contract in 2020. The same goes for 2021, although re-signing their young core could start to make things difficult. Luol Deng will be long gone by then, though.
The point I’m trying to make here is that the Lakers have the potential to sign a game-changer in any of the upcoming three offseasons. And with plenty of talent set to hit the market in each of those years, Magic will surely be shooting for the moon.
With NBA Summer League over and training camp still a ways off, all we can do now is speculate. Seeing as everyone’s already writing off LeBron and the Lakers (a bad decision), it made sense to take an extremely early look at a few future targets for one of the NBA’s most storied franchises.
So let’s dive right in — read ahead to see which superstars I’ve highlighted as dream targets for the Lakers from 2019 to 2021. The chances are slim they get any of them. However, as we’ve seen in recent years, NBA free agency is always capable of yielding spectacular, unprecedented results.
