Los Angeles Clippers: 3 takeaways from the 2018 offseason
1. Acquiring Kawhi (or another star) is the next goal
There have been many conflicting reports surrounding Kawhi Leonard and what he wants. It’s unclear where he’ll be playing to start the 2019-20 season, but it seems Leonard may prefer the Clippers over the Lakers.
He supposedly isn’t interested in joining a super-team, per Yahoo! Sports‘ Shams Charania. If this is true, the Clippers can either wait for free agency or get a head start by trading some of their young assets and expiring contracts for him.
If Leonard isn’t available, the Clippers could then target Jimmy Butler. Butler turned down the Minnesota Timberwolves’ extension earlier in free agency, and could be on the move if he doesn’t plan to re-sign.
The Clippers could have the most salary cap space during the summer of 2019. Other notable free agents include Klay Thompson, DeMarcus Cousins and Jordan, among others.
Los Angeles has the flexibility to make trades or sign big-name free agents in their short-term future. It also has young talent that can develop while the team still remains competitive.
No one’s talking about it, but the Clippers have everything in place to become the next super-team.
