2. Fewer opportunities for the young guys

Kevin Love’s extension might not affect players like Cedi Osman or Collin Sexton in terms of minute restrictions, but it does though prevent the offense from running through them by limiting the number of shots they’ll take. No young and inexperienced player can evolve without getting the required amount of shots, meaning that there is an indirect effect.

Both these guys have really impressed with their style of play during the summer. Osman participated in Turkey’s games in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers, where he led Turkey to two victories in two games. Sexton was the centerpiece of the NBA Summer League team that made it to the semifinals, exciting plenty of fans along the way.

Love’s extension does, though, affect more players like Larry Nance Jr. and — why not — Billy Preston, who the Cavaliers have signed on a two-way contract. Kevin Love is now the one and only star in Cleveland, meaning that it is hard to imagine him getting fewer than 30 minutes per contest — and plenty of shots in his time on the floor.
