Toronto Raptors: Top 10 moments from 2017-18 NBA season
4. VanVleet’s game-winner
Speaking of electrifying moments with the game on the line, on March 7, Toronto played one of its regular season matchups against the Detroit Pistons on the road. The Pistons had recently acquired the new face of the franchise in Blake Griffin from the Los Angeles Clippers. They were also in the race for bottom seeding playoff spot at the time.
The implications of this game were instrumental for Detroit to see how they would match up against the top team in the conference (by record), since they would likely see the Toronto Raptors as a potential first round opponent.
The game was unexpectedly full of outstanding plays, providing not one but two top-10 moments for the Raptors’ season. One in particular will be mentioned later on in this list.
Fred VanVleet, who was having a terrible shooting night, had gone for 1-for-9 from the floor prior to hitting the game-winner in the final seconds of overtime.
DeRozan dropped 42 points in his performance and had the game-winning assist in the play that he made happen, but all eyes were on the undrafted guard from Wichita State.
The moment provided one of the best metaphors of FVV’s personal mantra #BetOnYourself. The play provided example to the new modern offensive (third in Offensive Rating the NBA), to play less iso-ball and get the best shot available.
