3. Stan Van Gundy’s system is out

Stan Van Gundy and the Orlando Magic took the NBA by storm a decade ago with his four-out system. When he came to Detroit, he was given full control over the team and attempted to replicate it with Andre Drummond playing the Dwight Howard role. However, he was never able to get the players on the roster to be what he envisioned. The team never got the shooters necessary and the system didn’t work.

He’s now gone and Dwane Casey’s system is in. Casey morphed with the NBA to add more defensive-minded players that could space the floor. He even turned, albeit slowly, the team’s center Jonas Valanciunas into somewhat of a floor-spacer. Casey has to figure out which incumbent players are in for the long haul and which aren’t.

Casey wanted to create a system that had floor-spacing to make up for former All-NBA Raptor DeMar DeRozan‘s lack of long range shooting. For the Raptors last season, eight rotation players shot at least 36 percent from 3-point range. This offseason has focused on the Pistons adding more shooters to create space for Reggie Jackson and Blake Griffin to thrive. The old system is out and the new system is in.
