Denver Nuggets: 3 takeaways from the 2018 offseason
2. Isaiah Thomas is a boom or bust play
Isaiah Thomas signed a one-year, $2 million contract and will be the Denver Nuggets’ backup point guard. Should Thomas be fully recovered from his hip injury, the Nuggets will be getting an All-Star caliber player at a price that should be considered robbery.
We’re only two seasons removed from IT’s all-star campaign with the Boston Celtics. He gives the Nuggets a scoring punch that will (hopefully) be willing to do anything to help the team win, even if that means coming off the bench as the sixth man.
Thomas averaged 15.2 points, 4.8 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game in 32 appearances for the Los Angeles Lakers. If fully healthy, IT can definitely return to All-Star form. With a full offseason to work with, Thomas can build chemistry with the Nuggets and help lead them to the playoffs.
Adding Thomas to an already deep roster is the icing on the cake for this squad. Guards such as Jamal Murray and Gary Harris will benefit from having IT on the team, as they will not be relied on to score as much as last season.
He can also mentor the young guards on the team as he comes in as the second-oldest veteran on the roster. Although the Western Conference is getting stronger, the Nuggets will undoubtedly be a formidable team. Look for Boston’s former MVP candidate to outplay his contract and build upon his All-Star numbers that we saw not too long ago.
