The verdict

Overall, Napier is a solid addition. He’s the type of guard you want next to guards who need touches, and the Nets have two of those. Napier will get a solid chunk of minutes, and in desperation, he can start if someone gets hurt. That can be quite valuable to a team who saw Russell lose half the season to a knee problem.

There is minimal downside to this pickup. If he struggles initiating offense with bench units, the Nets can revert to LeVert. As long as Napier is shooting palatably, he will have a role on this team. Brooklyn needs shooters more than any team not tanking next season.

In a way, this is like adding a backup guard to a team that didn’t have one last season. Lin missed basically all of 2017-18, so it’s like the Nets lose nothing rotation-wise.

This falls in line with the methodology of Sean Marks’ maneuvers since being hired: low-risk, solid reward. Eventually, all those small victories will add up.

Napier brings a fun spark to an already fun roster. As a scorer and shooter, he will entertain the fans while also satisfying the efficiency nerds.
