2018 NBA free agency tracker: Grades for every deal so far
Fred VanVleet: 2 years, $18 million (Toronto Raptors)
Despite no one on this roster being untouchable, the Toronto Raptors appear to be lurking in the murky waters of the Eastern Conference, in the event the biggest fish in the pond, LeBron James, rides a warmer current out West. The Raptors haven’t moved anyone, and they’re going to retain their most important free agent.
After finishing third in Sixth Man of the Year voting as the anchor of the NBA’s best bench, Fred VanVleet was poised for a nice payday from someone as a restricted free agent. His impact extended far past the 8.6 points and 3.2 assists per game he averaged in just his second season, as he shot 41.4 percent from 3-point range and was a steadying presence off the pine.
Rather than let VanVleet field other offers, Toronto struck first with a fair deal that will pay him $9 million a year. It’s not an overcommitment for a second-year player, nor did the Raptors let him walk just to avoid the luxury tax. They’re about $13 million over the tax line now, but with King James abdicating his Eastern throne, it could very well be worth it.
