Derrick Jones Jr.: 2 years, $3.2 million (Miami Heat)
For the South Beach contingent hoping Pat Riley would work some magic this summer, start moving pieces around and put the Miami Heat back in position to land a star, the team’s first move of the entire offseason was probably pretty underwhelming.
After not having a pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, the Heat kicked off free agency by agreeing to keep reserve wing Derrick Jones Jr. on a two-year, $3.2 million deal, with the second year being non-guaranteed.
DJJ is probably most known for his appearance in the Slam Dunk Contest and his otherworldly bounce, but his 3.7 points and 2.4 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per game (over 14 appearances) hardly leap off the page. He’s a committed defender, but an entirely incapable 3-point shooter. The risk is minimal here, but more than likely, so is the reward.
