2018 NBA free agency tracker: Grades for every deal so far
Isaiah Canaan: 1 year, $1.8 million (Phoenix Suns)
With the roster set at 15 guaranteed contracts and the Phoenix Suns rolling with Brandon Knight, rookie Elie Okobo and Shaquille Harrison at the 1-spot, this was a somewhat unexpected move. It’s not a bad thing to have some competition going into training camp though, and Isaiah Canaan’s return from a horrific, season-ending injury is a happy story.
In his 19 games with the team last year, Canaan put up 9.1 points and 4.0 assists in 22 minutes per game. He’s a veteran presence, a career 35.1 percent shooter from 3-point range and at the very least, will push Okobo and Harrison to earn everything they get.
Canaan’s contract hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it’s likely a one-year, non-guaranteed deal worth the veteran minimum ($1.8 million). It remains to be seen who winds up getting the axe to cut this roster down to 15.
