Jeff Green: 1 year, $2.4 million (Washington Wizards)
To be fair, Jeff Green is better than he’s given credit for. Most see him as the guy who fell short of becoming the multi-positional wing dynamo everyone thought he’d be after a few prime seasons in OKC and Boston. He averaged 10.8 points per game off the bench for the Cavs last year and had a couple of big-time playoff performances, including Games 6 and 7 of the conference finals.
However, there’s a reason the 31-year-old Green has the reputation he has, and he’s by no means an adequate replacement in the second unit for the departing Mike Scott. Consistency has always been Green’s problem, and for all the poster dunks he’s capable of throwing down at his age, his lack of 3-point shooting, lockdown defense and overall reliability limit the upside of such a signing.
Even on a veteran minimum deal with the Washington Wizards, Green is a career 33.2 percent shooter from distance and was nowhere near as effective off the bench on a nightly basis as Scott. Considering the Clippers most likely poached Scott for the veteran minimum, it’s hard to be excited about a passable replacement that’s ultimately a downgrade.
