Point Guard

  1. Lonzo Ball
  2. Rajon Rondo
  3. Alex Caruso

Yes, I’m predicting that Lonzo Ball is named the starter by the time the regular season rolls around. It’ll be a boxing match between two worthy opponents, but I don’t see the Lakers going back on their word after only one season.

When Ball was originally drafted, Magic Johnson called him the “new face of the Lakers” (via NBA.com). And although his rookie season wasn’t perfect, the No. 2 overall pick more than lived up to the hype as a dynamic passer who surprisingly showed elite rebounding and defensive skills as well. The future is Lonzo, regardless of who else is on the roster.

That leaves Rajon Rondo to serve as the backup point guard and leader of the second unit. It may not be ideal considering his experience and $9 million salary, but it is what it is. As great a passer as Rondo can be, his lack of shooting and fading defense will keep him from leapfrogging Ball on the depth chart.

That leaves Alex Caruso to serve as depth behind the top two point guards. The balding wonder has endeared himself with fans and front office alike, with an exciting mix of passing, basketball IQ and scoring. If Ball or Rondo gets hurt, the Lakers can rest easy with Caruso serving in the No. 3 role.
