The verdict

Michael Carter-Williams will have to prove his worth to Rockets fans after the team placed its faith in him with a one-year deal. On paper, it is difficult to see him meshing with the current group of Rockets because of his significantly different offensive skill-set.

However, the point guard is still only 26 years old, so there is still some room for improvement to his game going forward. If he manages to carve out a role on the team and performs well as the Rockets try to knock off the Golden State Warriors, he could be in for a payday and a longer-term contract when he hits free agency once again next summer.

Since this is only a minimum salary deal that will not take up a lot of space in Houston’s payroll, it is a low-risk play for a backup point guard. Still just 26 years of age, Michael Carter-Williams could still have a breakout year and live up to the potential that made him the 11th pick of the NBA Draft in 2013 and the former Rookie of the Year.
