Indiana Pacers: 3 reasons Kyle O’Quinn is a great pickup
2. He brings the energy in limited minutes
O’Quinn’s averages for the 2017-18 season were 7.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.3 blocks per game. At face value, those aren’t good numbers. They’re probably not even starter-worthy, but every stat needs context, and these come by noting they were achieved in only 18.0 minutes a game.
Equate those numbers into a 36-minute night and all of a sudden KOQ looks like one of the best big men in the game, pumping out 14.3 points, 12.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.5 blocks.
Per 36 minute numbers can never be 100 percent accurate, but they paint an interesting picture that speaks volumes to the energy O’Quinn brings to the court in the limited minutes he receives.
In Turner, Thaddeus Young and Domantas Sabonis, Indiana has three guys all capable of manning the center position, leaving little playing time for one of the newest members of the team.
It won’t matter, though, because O’Quinn wasn’t brought in to play 36 minutes a night. Odds are, he’ll get around the 18 he got this past year in New York.
Looking at the success he had and has always had in limited playing time during his six-year career, O’Quinn can enter the game at a moment’s notice and an impact is soon to follow. The only question is from what facet of his game will that impact come.
