Charlotte Hornets: 3 reasons Tony Parker is a good addition
The Charlotte Hornets reunited head coach James Borrego with his former point guard, but was it a smart move for the team?
Tony Parker didn’t have one of his banner years with the San Antonio Spurs last season, relegated to the bench for the first time in his 17-year career. So it was a big surprise when the Charlotte Hornets made a deal to sign the experienced point guard to help their young core.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN broke the news early in the afternoon on July 6 that the longtime San Antonio Spur Tony Parker would be trading in the silver and black for a cyan Hornets jersey.
The Hornets got a great deal for Tony Parker, securing his services for just $10 million over the next two seasons to beat out the Spurs and Denver Nuggets for him. The Spurs only wanted Parker to come back for one season and have a limited playing role/full-time mentoring role, making it easier for Parker to head East.
The Hornets didn’t even have to use their whole Mid-Level Exception (MLE) on Parker, a welcome sight with their already bloated salary cap. Tony Parker is getting paid pretty fairly for being at the end of his career, making this a win-win for both sides. His $5 million salary coming to him this season will rank 41st in the league for point guards.
With money not being a main factor for the Hornets signing Parker, let’s dig into three more reasons Tony Parker is a good addition for the Charlotte Hornets.
