5. Familiarity

Free agency is no certainty. Risk is present, for both player and team. For the player, the risk is undervaluing his production. But the risk is also assumed on scheme, quality minutes, opportunity and team performance. Every NBA player wants to compete for the title. Each year, only 30 players achieve that goal.

The Orlando Magic are very familiar with Aaron Gordon. Likewise, Gordon is very familiar with the Magic. So far, that relationship has worked well for both. Gordon has flourished in the power forward role he’s held with the Magic these past four seasons. Entering the NBA as the fourth overall pick of the 2014 NBA Draft, his production has climbed steadily for each of the past four seasons.

Unfortunately, his team has never won more than 35 games in any given season. The Magic hope to turn things around this season, and signing Gordon is a huge step in the right direction. His production is trending with sharp improvement over each of the past four seasons, so the expectation for a bright future is simply banking on that same trend continuing.
