The Los Angeles Clippers re-signed Avery Bradley, but is his past merit enough to warrant this new deal?

The Los Angeles Clippers and guard Avery Bradley have agreed to a two-year, $25 million contract, per Shams Charania of Yahoo! Sports. This deal was overshadowed by the news of DeMarcus Cousinsagreeing to join the Golden State Warriors, reported a little over four hours earlier.

Even before Cousins, it was already understood that the Pacific Division would be significantly stronger with LeBron James signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Phoenix Suns have also made moves throughout the offseason, starting by taking Deandre Ayton with the first overall selection in the 2018 NBA Draft and signing Trevor Ariza in free agency.

Lottery teams like the Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Memphis Grizzlies all made solid additions through the draft and will be competitive if healthy. It’s unlikely the Clippers remain in the playoff race in the Wild West.

That’s why they drafted Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jerome Robinson with the No. 11 and 13 picks in the draft, respectively. They also let All-Star DeAndre Jordan walk in free agency. It was time for a rebuild, rather than continued mediocrity.

With this in mind, retaining Bradley was not the right move for the Clippers. Here are three reasons why re-signing him won’t help the team’s future.
