Indiana Pacers: How will Doug McDermott fit in next year?
How he fits
For a team that ranked in the bottom third of the league in both 3-pointers made and attempted, McDermott’s shooting prowess will be a welcome addition.
The beauty of a guy like Doug McDermott, though, is his ability to be more than just a simple spot-up shooter, which he is also good at doing, at 44 percent in Dallas.
Like most of the other great outside shooters in the NBA, McDermott has proven successful coming off screens. During his time with the Mavericks, only 17 percent of the league was better in such situations.
Such prowess will allow McMillan to run all types of action for the team’s newest shooter, forcing the opposition to talk on defense that could result in miscommunication, leading to easy slips and layups for Indiana’s big men.
Where McDermott also thrived is in transition, able to run to his spots, set his feet and fire once the ball reaches his pocket.
The Pacers are not a team that enjoys running, ranking 24th in pace last year, but McMillan had addressed the need to do just that earlier in the season, making it a possible focus once training camp rolls around.
If Indiana is able to increase fast break opportunities, McDermott is a guy who can help, posting a combined 1.71 points per possession from both wings in transition.
