Philadelphia 76ers: 3 reasons Wilson Chandler trade is a terrific move
By Derek Hryn
The Philadelphia 76ers are yet to find their coveted superstar during this free agency period, but have made other improvements in the process. Here’s why Wilson Chandler is one of them.
The Philadelphia 76ers acquired forward Wilson Chandler and draft considerations from the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
In a deal that caught many off guard, the Sixers will take on Chandler’s $12.8 million expiring contract, giving the Nuggets’ books some much needed breathing room following the team’s recent extensions of Nikola Jokic (five years, $148 million) and Will Barton (four years, $53 million).
Jake Fischer of Sports Illustrated reported that Philly would also receive a 2021 second round pick and the rights to swap 2022 second round picks with Denver.
The 31-year-old wing is coming off of his 11th season in the NBA, and continues to be one of the league’s most underrated talents at defending and shot creation.
The Sixers are currently left with two options. The first would be to parlay Chandler’s contract into a possibility of gaining Kawhi Leonard from the San Antonio Spurs, or to keep him as another key veteran piece on their roster for next season — both of which could work in their favor.
