The verdict

On the surface, this signing could come back to haunt the Washington Wizards given how their locker room was last season. John Wall and Marcin Gortat traded barbs through the media last season despite Wall being out with a knee injury half the season.

Missing Wall hurt, but now that he’s healthy, his prospects with Dwight Howard should improve. Howard should work well for both sides, at least as a short-term fix. The Washington Wizards will be a postseason team in 2018-19 and their acquisitions of Dwight Howard and Jeff Green bolster their frontcourt and depth in a number of ways.

Now, they just need to produce. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Otto Porter Jr. are both entering prime seasons in their careers and Oubre needs to have a breakout year in 2018-19. Dwight Howard has the opportunity to anchor a solid team at the center position; he’ll just need to take it seriously.
