The Portland Trail Blazers will pick up another free agent by adding guard Seth Curry. Here’s why the younger brother of Stephen Curry will be a good addition.
The Portland Trail Blazers agreed to add Nik Stauskas to a minimum contract on the first day of the free agency, according to ESPN‘s Chris Haynes. Their second pickup was agreeing on a two-year, $5.6 million deal with Seth Curry, as ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported.
His first year is guaranteed for $2.75 million, and he has a player option on the second season.
Curry is a 6’2”, 185-pound guard that can play both positions He’s played four seasons in the league and had his best year during the 2016-17 season while playing for the Dallas Mavericks. He averaged 12.8 points, 2.7 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 29 minutes per game while shooting 48.1 percent from the field and 42.5 percent from the 3-point line that year.
He missed the entire 2017-18 campaign after he suffered a fractured left tibia in October and had season-ending surgery in February. Curry was medically cleared to play basketball about five weeks ago. If Curry can get back to the type of player he was before getting hurt, he could end up being one of the biggest steals in all of the free agency.
This a solid deal for both sides. If Curry has a good year, he can opt out of his contract and become a free agent next summer with higher value. If he has an okay year, he can return to Portland and try again. Rip City can take a chance on Curry because his deal is not a financial risk and his skills fill needs on this team. Here are three reasons this pickup was such a good move for the Blazers.
