Center: Brook Lopez

I was hoping for Clint Capela, but after James, KCP, Stephenson and McGee agreed to deals, the Lakers don’t have the financial means to pry him away from the Houston Rockets. So Brook Lopez it is, at least for now.

Lopez made it clear during his exit interview that he’d be willing to sign a discounted deal if the Lakers looked like legitimate contenders (via Lakers Nation). Following the King’s arrival in Los Angeles, I’d think that criteria has now been met. With that in mind, the Lakers can bring back Lopez and maintain some continuity at center.

My biggest concern here is that, teamed with James, Lopez creates a rather offensive-minded frontcourt. Neither is particularly outstanding on defense, although you could say James’ deficiencies on that end last season were due to fatigue. It’s a bit worrisome, but McGee can provide some defensive support at center when needed.

Either way, Lopez gives the Lakers another scoring threat who can benefit from James’ presence. Not only does he possess the outstanding post moves of eras passed, but he’s developed a solid shot from long range. LeBron will like knowing he can kick it out to his center and have a decent chance at the ball finding the bottom of the net.

Lopez may not be the third star the Lakers were hoping for, but he’s an exceptional talent at the 5-spot. Especially if he agrees to accept a discount, it’ll be a big boost to Los Angeles’ championship hopes.
