Los Angeles Lakers: Predicting post-LeBron James agreement starting 5
Shooting Guard: Kentavious Caldwell-Pope
Last season, Caldwell-Pope started all 74 of the games he played in for the Lakers. Despite the inconsistency we saw from him at times in 2017-18, I don’t think we’ll see much of a role change for him this season.
Especially if we get the “second half of 2017-18” version of Caldwell-Pope in 2018-19, the Lakers will love having him in the starting lineup. After shaking off the rust through the first couple of months, KCP finally found his stroke, emerging as a explosive 3-point threat and defensive menace.
If the Lakers get more of the same for millions less, it’ll be money well spent for Magic and co.
With Stephenson and Josh Hart still on the roster as well, don’t be surprised if KCP sees a noticeable dip in minutes. Still, at this moment, he looks like the starting 2-guard and “3-and-D” specialist for Los Angeles.
Admittedly, I was wary of re-signing Caldwell-Pope. The offensive ineptitude he displayed at times last year had me concerned, especially in terms of being able to capitalize on the open looks that are sure to be presented with James on the floor. As long as he accepts his new role as a shooting specialist, I think this partnership will be a fruitful one.
