3. Franchise point guard in place for the near future

Ask any fan of the NBA and they will tell you that the league is currently dominated by talented point guards who dominate the game with the ball in their hands. Bringing back a certified superstar in Chris Paul solidifies the point guard position for the Rockets for the next few years and allows the team to focus on building depth in other places on the court.

The defensive prowess of Paul is probably the biggest advantage of re-signing him. The Western Conference is full of talented point guards like Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook and Damian Lillard, so having a player who can match up with these opposing point guards on a nightly basis makes the process of game-planning much simpler on the Rockets’ coaching staff.

On the offensive end, bringing back Paul ensures that the team can run a similar system as last year and there will be no need for a new point guard to come in and learn how to direct the offense. Paul can serve as the floor general and perfect James Harden complement for the Rockets until he’s 37.
