Oklahoma City Thunder: 3 reasons Hamidou Diallo was a bad pick
3. The Thunder have enough shooting guards
By acquiring Hamidou Diallo, the Oklahoma City Thunder will be adding yet another shooting guard to the fold. On its own, it’s understandable that Sam Presti appreciates Diallo’s athleticism and potential. However, in the context of the current roster, it’s odd that he would not only acquire another 2-guard, but trade to get him.
Diallo joins OKC’s legion of shooting guards, which includes Andre Roberson, Alex Abrines, Terrance Ferguson, two-way contract players Daniel Hamilton and P.J. Dozier and fellow draftee Devon Hall. Out of the six, Diallo is most similar to Ferguson. Both will be 20 years old by opening night, are uber-athletic and struggle with their jump shot.
Then again, those commonalities make this acquisition all the more head-scratching. Why would the Thunder go and get a second Terrance Ferguson? Also, with Roberson and Abrines ahead of both of them on the depth chart, where does Diallo fit into the grand scheme of things?
Devon Hall is more in line with the type of shooting guard the Thunder needed. He is a 3-and-D wing, shooting 43.2 percent from beyond the arc in 2017-18 while leading college basketball’s second-best defense.
Unfortunately, general managers can never seem to pass up athleticism and upside. Despite already having a project 2-guard on his roster, Sam Presti couldn’t help but to get one more.
