5. Doug McDermott

After the Dallas Mavericks did not tender him a qualifying offer, Doug McDermott is heading for unrestricted free agency. Some will argue that McDermott can play on the wing, but as a defensive minus, that’s unrealistic. His future is as a stretch-4 specialist off the bench.

In his past three seasons, McBuckets has converted on 40.3 percent of his 3.0 3-point attempts per game. He’s a model of consistency, which not all marksmen can say in today’s NBA.

His floor-spacing would fit beautifully in Brooklyn. He’d have one job, to shoot, which is a quality the Nets’ bench lacked quite a bit last season. Brooklyn takes a ton of 3s, and McDermott would fit that part of the scheme quite well.

The night-and-day combo of him and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is a fun subplot too. I’ll be sure to write about them as character foils if McBuckets signs here, because their completely opposite skill-sets are intriguing to examine. Hollis-Jefferson is a point-forward who does everything but shoot and score, while McDermott specifically does those two things. The ability of both to coexist as modern 4s in the NBA is fascinating.
