The Atlanta Hawks had a chance at Luka Doncic or an athletic big men in the 2018 NBA Draft, but settled on Trae Young. Should their fans panic?

The Atlanta Hawks had a desirable position to be in during the 2018 NBA Draft. It was all but set in stone that Deandre Ayton was going first overall. Luka Doncic was thought to be a great fit for the Sacramento Kings, but the Kings went with another big man, Marvin Bagley III.

The Hawks saw opportunity staring them in the face: Luka Doncic, the top international prospect from Real Madrid/Slovenia. The Dallas Mavericks saw it too, pouncing on the chance to trade up. The Mavericks gave the Hawks their No. 5 pick and a protected first round draft pick to move up two spots to select.

Atlanta certainly had other needs in the draft, but if a point guard is what it wanted, it could’ve had a chance to select another point guard at No. 19, or even used picks at 19 and 30 to trade back up.

Right before the NCAA Tournament, Jake Fischer with The Crossover/Sports Illustrated spoke with five NBA scouts and the assessments were not kind on Trae Young. One scout mentioned the following:

"“The problem I have with him, I understand there’s the natural Stephen Curry comparison, but standing next to Steph and standing next to Trae, he’s significantly smaller, he’s more frail and he doesn’t have the same physical tools that Steph has as far as sheer size, not that Steph’s a huge guy. A worry I have about him is physically holding up.”"

Will Young hold up in the NBA? Will the Hawks regret trading Luka Doncic for him? Many think they will, so let’s dig into five reasons why this draft pick may not work out.
