Minnesota Timberwolves: 5 potential free agency targets in 2018
By Luke Askew
2. Will Barton
Will Barton is a unique basketball player. Last season for Denver, he averaged an impressive 15.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. He also shot a respectable 45.2 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from 3-point range.
Normally, a guy with his level of production would be making a ton of money in today’s NBA, especially since he can defend too.
However, that isn’t the case with Will Barton. He played the last three years for Denver on a three-year, $10.5 million deal. To put it simply, the Nuggets were robbing him blind. Only $3.3 million per season for that kind of production? That’s ludicrous.
However, the market for Will Barton still may be fairly small. Despite his overall production, he can be a little streaky and doesn’t always make the right play. This is being a little nit-picky, but it’s important stuff.
A lot of teams won’t place a high value on Barton this offseason, which means that if the Wolves can swoop in and pick him up, they shouldn’t even hesitate. For a team as awful in bench production as the Wolves, Barton is the kind of piece that could lift them over the hump.
Barton is one of the more mysterious players this summer. There hasn’t been a lot of noise around his name for how much talent he has, so it will be interesting to see what happens with him. The Wolves should do whatever they can to sign him, though.
