1. DeMarcus Cousins

DeMarcus Cousins averaged 25.2 points and career-highs of 12.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game. His dominance was cut short, however, as he suffered an Achilles injury in a 115-113 win over the Houston Rockets on Jan. 26.

Before the injury, giving the 6’11″ center a max contract seemed like a no-brainer for the New Orleans Pelicans. However, the team had a better winning percentage without him and even swept the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round of the playoffs.

That, coupled with the career-altering severity of Achilles injuries, makes offering Cousins a long-term contract seem risky. Offering the max would also force New Orleans to give up one of Rajon Rondo or Ian Clark, both of whom shined in the playoffs.

If the Pelicans don’t offer an appealing enough deal, Dallas could come into play.

First off, the Mavericks have had recent experience helping players overcome similar injuries. The team signed Wesley Matthews in 2015 shortly after he ruptured his left Achilles tendon, and his recovery has been remarkable. The medical staff in Dallas could help Cousins get back to All-Star form.

Cousins would immediately improve the Mavericks’ rebounding. Dallas ranked 27th in the league in rebounding during the 2017-18 season. He adds strength and size inside the paint.

As opposed to Jordan, he would also be able to space the floor well. Cousins shot 35.4 percent from 3-point land on 6.1 attempts per game. He also wouldn’t be a liability at the free throw line like Capela.

Cousins is the all-around superstar that Dallas has been looking for. He fills multiple needs and comes with the added benefit of weakening a division foe. The two are a match made in heaven.
