9. Anthony Tolliver‘s 3-point shot

The Detroit Pistons hoped to adapt to the pace-and-space of the new NBA in 2017-18 and they accomplished that to an extent. While their adjusted offensive pace only went from 95.0 to 96.2, the presence of a 3-point shot improved for Van Gundy. A season ago, the Pistons were bottom-feeders when it came to the 3-point shot.

The Pistons came in ranked No. 27, No. 26, and No. 28 in 3-point field goals made, attempted and percentage, respectively, and improved to top 20 or better in those categories. In 2017-18, the Pistons were 16th in 3-point baskets made, 14th in attempts and fifth in 3-point percentage.

A reason for the uptick in 3s was the return of veteran Anthony Tolliver and in his third season back, the stretch-4 proved that he was a valuable asset for Detroit and various other teams who might be in need of a long-range specialist.

Hitting 159 of his 365 long range attempts, Tolliver improved his career 3-point percentage to 37.6 percent by shooting 43.6 percent from deep in 2017-18, finishing with the seventh-best 3-point percentage in the NBA. Finding a rhythm from deep and extending his range, Tolliver led the Pistons and proved to be a scorer they can utilize in small-ball situations.

The best performance of the year for Tolliver came against the Sixers, when he connected on a career-high seven 3-point baskets and tied a season-high of 25 points. Tolliver is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the offseason and while he is a 10-year veteran, thanks to his potential upside with his newfound range from beyond the arc, it will be hard for the front office to see him just walk out. Expect the Pistons to make a push for Tolliver to stay in Motown.
