Atlanta Hawks: 5 potential free agency targets in 2018
2. Ian Clark
Schlenk, who was the assistant GM for the Golden State Warriors prior to joining the Hawks, seems determined to remake the Hawks in the image of the defending NBA champions. His draft picks speak for themselves; he used his two first round picks to select two players that have drawn comparisons to Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry.
If Schlenk indeed plans on tuning the Hawks into the Warriors-lite, then he may as well bring in a former Warrior to fill out the rotation, specifically New Orleans Pelicans guard Ian Clark.
In Clark’s two seasons in the Bay Area, he averaged 5.3 points with impressive .472/.368/.783 shooting splits. His job description was simple: stand behind the 3-point line and wait for an open look. If signed, I would expect Clark to fill a similar role in Atlanta.
Clark made a paltry $1.5 million playing for the Pelicans last year. His numbers — 7.4 points per game on 52.9 percent true shooting — suggest that a significant pay raise isn’t in his future. However, Clark has shown in the past that he can play well off of guys that can create their own shot. He could do that again in Atlanta.
If Young and Huerter are the real deal, Clark could be a nice ancillary piece for the Hawks if they sign him.
