5. The Hawks have a modern point guard

Trae Young is a point guard that can lead your team in points every night and still put up great assist numbers. That sounds like a perfect fit for today’s NBA when looking at a majority of point guards, namely Stephen Curry and Russell Westbrook.

Young led all of Division I NCAA basketball with points scored per game at 27.4 (1.5 more than the next guy) and was five points shy of leading all of college basketball in total points (876). Young wasn’t afraid to take a lot of 3-pointers to get to that total either, as he took the fourth-most in the NCAA (328). He made 118 of them, the eighth-most across the board.

Young never failed to post double-digit points in his only season of college ball, scoring at least 20 points in 25 of his 32 games and over 40 points on four separate occasions. He put together 12 different double-doubles last season too, with 11 of them coming from accumulating 10 or more assists per game. One of Young’s best all-around games of his career came back in December against Northwestern State.

Then there was the game where Trae Young hit 10 3-pointers. He can pull up for a 3 or step back with someone in his face and still nail the shot. Young was just three assists shy of a triple-double in this game as well.

Young was one of only 34 college players in NCAA history to post at least 25 points per game and five assists per game in a season. Included on this list is Stephen Curry, who put up 28.6 points and 5.6 assists per game back 2008-09. Young nearly matched the points per game and put up three more assists per game than Curry this past season.
