2018 NBA Draft: 5 potential first round steals
4. Robert Williams, C — Boston Celtics (No. 27)
The Boston Celtics are another organization that shows time and time again, particularly under general manager Danny Ainge, that they can maximize their growth through the draft no matter what position they have. This year was no exception.
Robert Williams is a bit undersized to play the position he is going to be best suited for, making him the most paradoxical player in the draft. He is 6’10” but will be a great pick-and-roll, lob-catching and rim-protecting center for the Celtics. Complement his skill-set with Jayson Tatum’s defense, as well as Al Horford’s prescient floor-spacing, and the Celtics may find that they don’t need a do-it-all, back-to-the-basket traditional center.
Williams averaged 10.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.6 blocks per game in his sophomore season at Texas A&M, and was likely the best shot-blocker out of this year’s draft outside of Mohamed Bamba. He fits a Clint Capela and DeAndre Jordan mold, and will likely enjoy a really successful career in the NBA. Leave it to the Celtics to grab him at the tail end of the first round. Bravo.
