5. Drafting the best player available

The guards on the Mavericks’ roster include J.J. Barea, Yogi Ferrell, Seth Curry, Wesley Matthews and Kyle Collinsworth. All of these players are nice pieces to have, but none of them are starter quality or have All-Star potential.

Although the center and power forward positions were also a weak point, drafting the best player available in Docic was still the right move. The team was still able to trade for big men in Raymond Spalding and Kostas Antetokounmpo with the No. 56 and 60 overall picks, respectively. The Mavs can also pursue centers like DeMarcus Cousins or Clint Capela during free agency, which is why drafting Doncic was the best choice.

Doncic averaged 20.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per 36 minutes, unprecedented for an 19-year-old European player. His size and length allow to get his shot off in any situation and his movement while coming off of screens is magic.
