Los Angeles Lakers: 2018 NBA Draft grades
By Dan Lovi
Overall
Going into the 2017-18 season, the Lakers were devoid of a first round pick. Simply getting back a draft pick should be considered a win.
Their biggest needs heading into the draft were shooting and size. Mykhailiuk can help solve the shooting problem, while Wagner can help in both areas. Defense, however, is going to be an issue for both players.
Moe and Svi will fit in well in Luke Walton‘s fast-paced offense and could carve out a significant role in their rookie seasons. If they can improve defensively, the likelihood of them sticking around in the league for the long haul increases exponentially.
Bonga remains the wild card pick in this draft. He likely will remain overseas for at least two seasons and depending on his growth or lack thereof, might not ever play in an NBA game.
The Lakers, who are trying to keep their cap space open to potentially sign two max players, keep Bonga off the books due to the fact he’s a second round pick. The Lakers are expected to sign their other second round pick, Mykhailiuk, but his salary number won’t be a huge burden against the cap.
